Bio:

John worked at the AA (Automobile Association) for 27 Years from 1988 to 2005. In 2008 he set up the AA’s Special Operations Response Team (AA SORT) which was the AA’s very successful excursion into flood and severe weather response. John had national responsibility for the development and operation of the team until he left the AA in April 2015 following the team’s unexpected disbandment. During his time leading the SORT team John was actively involved in, among other events, the Cumbria floods of 2009 and the Thames Valley flooding in 2014. He also sat for several years on the Wales Inland Water & Flood Rescue Group.

Since leaving the AA, John has been working as a freelance business consultant in the UK and Europe. He holds current certification as a Swiftwater & Flood Rescue Technician (Level 3) and as a Manager of Water Flood Incidents (Level 5).

John lives in Berkshire with his wife Sharon. They have three married daughters and one grand-daughter. Outside of work John enjoys travel, walking, serving as part of his church’s music team and pretty much anything to do with aircraft.

Bio:

Dale has served with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service for 23 years and has served in Stations across the county. Before joining the service Dale was a member of the Armed Services serving in the Royal Corps of Signals. Dale is currently the Emergency Response Manager which main function involves Research & Development of new equipment and procedures.

Dale was the incident commander for the Alton Towers Smiler crash and will give you an insight into the difficulties faced during the rescue operation and any learning outcomes which have been identified.

Swiftwater Rescue at Kayaking Competitions

Bio:

Neil has been a Swiftwater Rescue Instructor since 1997. As a fluent German speaker he is the Rescue 3 Instructor Trainer working in Austria and Germany, running his own company there simply called Swiftwater Rescue.

Having started kayaking at the age of 12 in the flat countryside of south east England, he caught the whitewater bug while working in the French alps. Soon afterwards he started to travel the globe, working as a raft guide and safety kayaker, to experience as much whitewater as possible every day of the year.

Now almost 25 years later he is not only a qualified BCU Canoeing Coach but also an International Rafting Federation Instructor, Canyoning guide and the Safety Director for the Adidas Sickline Kayak World Championships.

He is permanently based in the Austrian Tirol where he lives surrounded by the mountains and whitewater that is now his home. In the winters he avoids getting wet by working as a ski and snow board instructor, and spends his free time ski touring & ice climbing. On the rare occasions that he finds some warm water, he can be found relaxing in it scuba diving, but only if the visibility is good.

ICE-SAR and Implementation of Formal Swiftwater Rescue Procedures in Iceland

Bio:

Dagbjartur has been an active member of the Rescue Team of Hafnarfjordur since 1989. For the last 17 years his focus has been on SAR management, been a member of both Area command and National command.

Today Dagbjartur is one of five Duty officers for ICE-SAR. Dagbjartur has been a lead instructor for SAR management in ICE-SAR Rescue school and he has been a director for the school since 2011. Dagbjartur still participates in most management training within the Rescue School. Dagbjartur was one of the Team Leaders for ICE-SAR international USAR team between 2008 and 2011.

He has also had training as an UNDAC (Unated Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination) member from the United Nations.

Bio:

Peter Astashenko is the head of department of the water rescue section at the Bavarian Red Cross, the Wasserwacht-Bayern.  It is the largest water rescue organisation in Bavaria, based in 526 cities with 256 task forces. There are 60,000 volunteers in the organisation.

Peter become a Red Cross volunteer in 1995 and served mostly in the ambulance service. He became a paramedic and a paramedic-instructor. He also worked as a dispatcher and as a HEMS Crew Member. He originally worked for a couple of years as a newspaper editor and graduated at the University of Passau in International cultural and business studies. Peter has a Masters degree in social management, and is working on his doctorate.

In November 2015 he became head of department of the Wasserwacht-Bayern and is responsible for 12 employees managing the overhead of the organisation and assisting the honorary board of directors. As a matter of course he completed his water rescue training and is a water rescue technician. In 2016 he oversaw the Bavarian Red Cross becoming a Rescue 3 Europe training provider.

Peter is married, lives in north-east Bavaria and works in Munich. In his spare time you can found him on the bike, on a walk, in an ambulance or – of course – in the water.

The Health Impacts of Flooding in the UK

Bio:

Paul is a Senior Paramedic for North West Ambulance Service and is based in North Cumbria. Paul has worked as a paramedic across the North West and spent a number of years on the Hazardous Area Response Teams in Liverpool and Manchester. During that time he responded to a number of high profile events ranging from flood and USAR events to firearm incidents, both as an operative and team leader. Paul was seconded to the National Ambulance Resilience  Unit to develop flood management knowledge for HART team leaders and Tactical Advisors within the U.K. ambulance service.

Paul is a Rescue 3 Europe Instructor Trainer and worked for a number of years as a level 5 kayak and raft coach, and as the senior rescue trainer for Rescue 3 UK. During this time he worked with a huge variety of organisations providing rescue training in water, rope and boat operations. He also sat on a a variety of whitewater and water rescue committees.

Academically, Paul is qualified as a Paramedic and part way through a BSC in Paramedic Practice. He also holds a degree in Environmental Planning and Management as well as a postgraduate in Geography Education.

 

Mark Taylor (Leeds University)

Helmets for Rescue

Bio:

Mark is a Research Fellow in the Performance Clothing Research Group. Before starting a late career in academia Mark worked in the field of IT.  In 1996 Mark started a new career path when he came to Leeds to read Sports Science (Outdoor Activities). After graduating with honours in 1999 he continued in this vein with a PhD which focused on the impact absorbing mechanisms of climbing helmets.

Upon completion of his PhD Mark was employed as a Research Fellow on an EPSRC funded project to investigate, among other things, novel ways to improve the measurement of air permeability and moisture vapour transmission.

Since the end of this project Mark has worked in many areas related to comfort in extreme environments and protection from falls from a height, whilst becoming more involved in teaching, principally in the Faculty of Engineering.
